Permit Information

Gunflint outfitting equipment

To travel the waterways of the BWCAW (Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness) and the Quetico Park you will need to obtain a travel permit. We will be happy to help you select the entry point that will best suit your travel needs. It is best to plan early to get the entry point that you wish.

The permits are set up to allow a certain number of parties to enter a specific entry point on a certain date, to alleviate from overcrowding.

BWCAW Camping Fees & Permits:

Under the regulations of the U.S. Forest Service, the Quetico Provincial Park and the LaVerendrye Park, each group is limited in size to no more than 9 people, and no more than 4 watercraft.  We will go over all the details with you at the time you make your reservation with us.  The costs of travel within the BWCAW is a base of $6.00 per permit, plus $16.00 per adult and $8.00 per youth (17 or younger) for camping fees.  Costs for the Quetico Provincial Park are a $15.00 permit fee plus $100 deposit at the time of booking (camping fees are $20 per adult per night and $8.00 per youth per night (Canadian funds)).  We need your credit card for this transaction.

Also with deposits for groups it should say we will need to be paid with either a non-profit check or credit card in the non-profit's name and the deposit for complete groups is $300 and partial groups are $100 per group of 9.

Remote Area Border Crossing (RABC):

If you want to visit and travel in Canada at any point during your trip (Quetico or LaVerendrye Parks) you will need an RABC permit since you are not reporting into Canada through a port of entry.  The cost is $30.00 Canadian per adult or per family (spouse and dependent children).  The easiest way to obtain the permit is online at: www.cbsa-asfc.gc.ca/publications/forms-formulaires/bsf386-eng.pdf   Please allow 4 weeks or longer for the Canadians to process this and send it back to you.  You must carry the permit and passport with you while you are on your trip.

Fishing Licenses

You may purchase a Minnesota and Canadian fishing license at Gunflint Lodge adjacent to our outfitting location. For non-resident Minnesota guests you can obtain a 1, 3 or 7 day license or a 14 day married couple license. Any person 16 years or older needs their own license to fish. A trout stamp is required if you fish or possess trout taken while fishing in a Minnesota lake.  Canadian license options include an 8 day or seasonal length, plus a conservation license with lower possession limits.

Starting in 2012 Canadian fishing licenses can be bought on line. If you are going into Canada and forget to do this before you come, we can do it here for you.
