Spend the first night of your family vacation in one of our rustic canoer cabins.

This Minnesota family vacation is a great trip for the family who wants to try a wilderness trip but would still like some of the amenities and comforts around the edges. You spend your first night with us in a private rustic canoer cabin with meals at the main lodge Bistro. After you pack your personal clothes and go through our trip briefing, we take you to a nearby canoe landing and set you in for your 3 day canoe trip. You have an easy route with modest paddling and portaging as you go into the wilderness, spending both your nights at the same campsite. The next day gives you a nice day to explore, fish, and work on your camping skills. On your third day you paddle back out where we pick you up and bring you back to Gunflint so you can get checked into a modern cabin with all the luxuries — bathrooms with great hot showers, luxurious beds, a nice living room with fireplace, etc. You have your last two nights in this cabin, and you can enjoy our naturalist program, go horseback riding, or relax as you wish.

Family vacation tips...

Children and adults can enjoy a canoe camping vacation.

Our beginner's canoe trip can be fun and educational for the whole family.

  • Plan your canoe route around the ages of the children in the family. Take along field guides so they can learn about the plants and animals they see along the way.

  • Let children help set up camp, cook meals, and plan the day’s activities — the more involved they are, the more enjoyment they’ll get out of the experience.

  • Plan each day’s route so that you return to your campsite before dark and have time to relax around the campfire.
