January is about here in the canoeing wilderness of Minnesota
The snows have come to the Gunflint Trail and the Boundary Waters Wilderness. Gunfint Lake finally froze over on Dec 28th so one more piece of the winter recreational puzzle is in place
Gunflint Outfitters News:
The warm weather here in the BWCA area has been a boost to our construction work. Jordi, the head of the construction company, has 4 buildings up and closed in, with 5 more started. The first 4 have the windows in, electical work done and shingles completed. The last 5 have the floors done, with wall raising soon to happen. They will all be ready for canoe parties by early May.
For this project, we took out a couple of our old bunk houses and are replacing them with comfortable separate cabins- each with a double and 3 twins, a refrigerator, micro wave, ceiling fan, modest heat, and a screened in porch. There will be a BBQ outside, a picnic table and a central fire ring. These cabins will be available for overnights before or after a canoe trip, or for a multi night stay to enjoy while you take day trips into the wilderness.

One of our favorite canoe trip routes in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness
Round Lake to Seagull loop
This route starts nearby at Round Lake and takes you into the interior of the BWCA through Brandt, Bat,Green, Gillis, Little Saganaga, Gaby, Ogish, Jasper, Alpine and Seagull lakes. It is very scenic, has quite a few moose and has good fishing in many locations. The fishing is interesting as it changes along the trip--at first you are in lakes with northern pike and lake trout and then during the last half of the trip you have walleye and smallmouth bass. There are several nesting pairs of Bald Eagles in the area and many beaver. A couple of the lakes have a lot of kingfisher birds and they are fun to watch as they feed along the shore.
This is an ideal route for a 5 to 6 day trip. We pick you up at the Seagull landing at the end of your trip for the 15 minute drive back to Gunflint.

Testimonial from one of our guests
Just a quick note to let you know what a fine job you did handling our trip ealier this month. We have used other outfitters in the past and, in comparison, I appreciate your excellent communication with me, upbeat and cheery staff, and the advance invoice to take care of the costs upfront, among the many services you provided us. We will be returning to our beloved BWCA again and we already know which outfitter we'll be using. Thanks again for the great work.
Sincerely, Steve Johnson
