A Gunflint Story...
Night fishing in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area can be a magical experience.
Night Fishing
For non-fishermen, night fishing is probably the least understood time to be on the water. Yet with a little common sense and planning, night fishing is awesome.
The common sense comes in when you pick the night to go. Pick a calm night with clear skies. Wet windy nights are just not fun on the water. Another part of common sense is to dress for the occasion. This means putting on everything you own: warm heavy pants, rain pants, sweatshirt, warm jacket, rain coat, waterproof boots, hat, and gloves. If you get too warm, take a layer off. No matter how warm the day was, it can still get cold on the water at night, especially during the trip home. Another part of common sense is making sure you have operating boat lights and a good flashlight. Finally, make sure you know exactly where you are going and where the rocks are. If you can’t find your fishing spot during the day, it won’t get any easier at night.
