Gunflint Outfitters BWCA Canoe Trips

BWCA camping trips

Another canoe season is upon us and we are ready to go. Another load of canoes has been delivered from Wenonah, the water levels are
going up (we have had enough spring rains to take the fired danger down to low), and the fish are biting.

Among our favorite spring canoe routes is the Granite River trip (you start right from our dock) and take the scenic 25 mile waterway all the way to Saganaga Lake.
The waterway is a series of connected lakes with modest rapids or waterfalls between each lake (most of the portages are fairly short--the longest one is 100 rods).
The fishing is good for walleye and bass, the campsites are comfortable and the scenery is outstanding. The route has a daily quota of 3 permits.

Next on our list is a canoe trip on the Ham Lake route. This includes a series of smaller lakes heading south through the BWCA going down to Long Island Lake. From
there you can base camp and them come back out the same way you went in, or you can continue on-- heading east through Kiskadinna coming out on Poplar Lake, or you
can head west through Frost Lake and work your way back out to Round Lake.

The third route on our short list is starting at Seagull and heading west to Alpine lake, where you make a major decision. An easy loop takes you north to Red Rock
Lake and back out at Saganaga (this is an easy trip that often lets you camp more than one night at a specific campsite). Your second choice from Alpine is to continue
east and south toward Ogishkamunci and on through Gaby and back out at Round Lake. This choice is good for a 5-6 day trip.

We have more routes described here

Gunflint Outfitters

These are just three of nearly 50 canoe routes we can offer you, based on your expertise, interests, and the length of your trip. One of the nice features of a canoe
trip from the Gunflint area is that most of our portages are fairly short, and most of the starting or ending points are within a few minutes of our base. You do not have to
depend on a tow boat to get you down a busy portal lake, and we can get you into the wilderness quickly.

The warm weather here in the BWCA area has been a boost to our construction work.  We have now finished our 9 new camper
cabins.  They have built in beds- one double and three twins, a refrigerator, microwave, overhead fan, electric heat, and a nice screened in porch with a built in table
and benches.  Outside there is a picnic table and a charcoal BBQ unit.

We are busy reserving canoe trip permits for those of you who have locked in your trip dates. Remember some of the entry points have a limited number of permits, so it
is important to get permits requests in sooner, rather than later.
